Velocity chapters 1-7

Billy is a man who works in a tavern in Napa County, California.  The tavern does not have a name other than just tavern.  He is a normal man with a pretty boring life.  His fiancee, Barbara, had been in a coma for over three years and he spends most of his evenings visiting her.  The book starts out that he is having a normal day.  After his shift, he walks outside to his car.  He found a note on his windshield saying that if he took the note to the police and got them involved, an elderly woman involved in charity work would be killed.  If he didn't take the note to the police a lovely young school teacher would be killed.  He had six hours to decide what to do.  He took the note to his friend Lanny who happened to be a police officer and they both decided that it was a joke.  They did nothing.  The next evening when he left work again he found another note.  Lanny showed up just before he read the second note with news of a blonde school teacher who had been beaten to near death then strangled.  They then read the second note together.  It said that if he didn't take it to the police that an unmarried man would be murdered, but if he did take it to the police a mother of three would be murdered.  He and Lanny decided that they should take the note in because they knew that it was real now.  Lanny said that he would take the second note and call Billy in an hour to set up a meeting with the sheriff.  Billy went to visit Barbara to kill time until Lanny called.  When he got home, his back door was unlocked and open.
